Awards Celebration – A Fine Time was had by all!

La Teraz was the scene for the second annual year-end celebration of dressage hosted by Dressage New Brunswick. The lovely and unique setting added to the high spirits as dressage enthusiasts gathered to look back at the year’s endeavours.

A slide show of in-the-ring and behind-the scenes photos from the 2009 competition year started off the festivities. Compiled by Michelle DeGarie, it was a terrific reminder of the work, effort, fun, and camaraderie that went into the summer’s scene. Particular thanks to “Images by Ceci”, who helped ensure every rider appeared on screen.

Amid copious door prizes and time-outs for delectable food, presentations were made to recognize all this year’s competitors, including those who had travelled to other Maritime province shows. Funding in the form of clinic incentive prizes and awards for out-of-Maritimes travel were given out. DNB stall plaques were presented (based on scores) and EC Gold awards (based on placings) were handed out in 14 categories, from Walk-Trot to FEI.

The evening’s highlight was an address from Equine Canada president Mike Gallagher, who spoke with warmth and humour about many of his equestrian experiences, from Pony Club days to his work as Team Leader for the equestrians during recent Pan Am, World Equestrian, and Olympic Games. It’s always a wonderfully entertaining eye-opener to learn about Mike’s adventures with, and on behalf of, Canada’s riders and their horses.

Mike continues to travel and work tirelessly for the betterment of equestrian sport in his role as EC president. We were delighted that he and his wife Allison could join us for one of the few evening he was actually in New Brunswick in recent weeks!

The evening wrapped up with the awarding of the four most prestigious honours:

  • James Mortimer Award for volunteering: Nicole Saulnier and Debbie Zinck.
  • Lieutenant Colonel James Kupkee Award for outstanding show season: Maggie Zinck with Denali and Gizmo.
  • Junior Sportsperson: Ingmara Wheeler
  • Senior Sportsperson: Patty Gulliver-Goucher

Many thanks to all who came out to enjoy an evening of celebration. Our sport has enjoyed tremendous support this past year. DNB broke the 100 mark in memberships in ’09, including 30 junior members! Our competitions set new entrance records, and the educational opportunities offered for both Juniors and adults were unparalleled.

And 2010 looks to be even better!
